Recap of 2010 National Junior Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament-Day 2

DENVER, CO (April 8, 2010) – The Charlotte Rollin’ Bobcats opened the second day of action in the 2010 National tournament against the Oklahoma Blaze.  The Blaze were one of the largest teams the Rollin' Bobcats had ever faced, after being down 19-26 at halftime, the Bobcats were able to foul out the Blaze's big man.  However, that proved to be too little too late as the Rollin' Bobcats fell for the second straight game, the final score was 35-45.  The Bobcats were led by Jacob Tyree's 9 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds and Sean Burns' 10 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.  This set up a final match-up between the Rollin' Bobcats and the Utah Wheelin' Jazz.

The Bobcats jumped out to a quick 25-18 lead against the Jazz and used relentless pressure on their superstar player.  The Bobcats completed the game, earning it from the free-throw line.  The Bobcats were led by Sean Burns' 11 points (including 3 key free-throws in the last minute of the game), 5 assists and 6 rebounds.  Jacob Tyree and Caitlin McDermott also contributed 17 and 14 points respectively.  The final score was 50-44 and the Rollin' Bobcats finished the 2009-10 season in 7th place Nationally.

The recognition of the Rollin' Bobcats had just begun at this point.  Jacob Tyree was on the second-all tournament team.  Caitlin McDermott and Jill Moore were on the girls-all tournament team.  The Rollin' Bobcats were also the most represented team for the Academic All-American team.  Lindsey Good (in her first year of eligibility for this award) was on the second team.  Jill Moore, Caitlin McDermott and Jacob Tyree were all on the first team and of greater interest, they finished in the #1, #2 and #4 spots respectively in the Nation.  WOW, great job Rollin' Bobcats!

Finally, Mike Godsey, assistant coach and one of the founding directors of Abilities Unlimited received the 2010   Bill & Julie Duncan Good Guy Award.  The award is given annually to the NWBA volunteer who exemplifies a commitment to wheelchair basketball at the grass roots level through contributions to a local team, conference or national organization.  The award is a great reflection on the combined efforts of all those involved with Abilities Unlimited and their 100% volunteer run organization.

Recap of 2010 National Junior Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament-Day 1

DENVER, CO (April 8, 2010) – The Charlotte Rollin’ Bobcats opened the tournament against the Mad City Badgers.  After falling behind early 2-9, the Bobcats installed their patented full-court press and reached halftime with a 22-9 halftime lead.  The Bobcats were led by Sean Burns and his career first (and program's first) triple double-10 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds.  Jacob Tyree also had 16 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists.  The final score was 47-29 and advanced the Bobcats into the winners bracket and a second round match-up against the Dallas Junior Mavericks.

The second round game was a challenge from the start.  The Junior Mavericks jumped out to a 25-8 lead.  The Bobcats bounced back to a 12-25 halftime deficit.  Early in the 2nd half, the Bobcats went on a 16-0 run and cut the lead to 6 points, but expended too much energy and ended up losing 32-48.  Once again the Bobcats were led by Sean Burns' 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Bobcats will conclude the tournament on Friday, April 9, 2010 with 2 games.  The first is against the Oklahoma Blaze at 11:45 a.m. Mountain Time.

Recap of Day 2 Lakeshore Foundation Regional Qualifier Wheelchair Basketball Tournament

Birmingham, AL February 21, 2010- The Charlotte Rollin' Bobcats team took on the Georgia Eagles in the first game of the single elimination portion of the weekend tournament.  The Eagles dominated the Bobcats in their previous match-up on Saturday afternoon so the Bobcats took a more conservative defensive approach to the game on Sunday.  After being down the day before by 27 points at halftime, the Rollin' Bobcats kept the halftime deficit to only 8 points despite having trouble shooting the ball consistently.  In the second half, the lead rose to as many as 10 points, but the Bobcats continued to pick away at the lead.  With 12 seconds remaining, the Bobcats still had an opportunity to run a full-court play to attempt a 3 pointer to tie the game, things didn't work out, but the Bobcats ended the tournament with a great effort.  Sean Burns led the Bobcats with 10 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists.  The Bobcats are next in action Friday, March 5, 2010, 6:00 p.m. at Ardrey Kell High School in the Ballantyne area of Charlotte.

Recap of Day 1 Lakeshore Foundation Regional Qualifier Wheelchair Basketball Tournament

Birmingham, AL February 20, 2010- The Charlotte Rollin' Bobcats team opened a busy basketball day against the Host Lakeshore Lakers.  The Bobcats had split their two previous meetings with the Lakers and battled throughout the game.  After a 12 point second half deficit, the Bobcats closed the gap and tied the game up with 5 minutes to play.  The Lakers, led by Jessie Atwell and his 28 points put in one last surge and the Lakers prevailed 53-47.  The Bobcats were led by Josh Lyles 23 points and  Jacob Tyree's 10 pt, 6 rebound, 5 assist efforts.

In the second game of the day, the Bobcats were matched up against the Music City Thunder.  The Bobcats kept the game close in the first half, trailing 15-22 at halftime but were not able to have a sustainable answer for Nathaniel Woodard and his 24 points.  The Bobcats were led by Sean Burns' 12 points and 6 rebounds.

In the third game of the day, the Rollin' Bobcats competed against the Georgia Eagles. The Eagles were a much taller and athletic team and jumped out to a 27 point halftime lead.  The Eagles continued their full-court pressure throughout the game and ended up winning 26-58.  The Bobcats were led by Jacob Tyree's 6 points and 6 rebounds.

In the final game of the day, the Rollin' Bobcats took on the Jr. Thunder from Raleigh, NC and ended the day on a very high note in what could only be described as a total team effort.  Josh Lyles, Jon Godsey and Breanna Gates each had 10 points a piece and Sean Burns (4 points and 15 rebounds) and Jacob Tyree (11 assists and 18 rebounds) also helped promote great Teamship.  Other superlatives for the Bobcats were Tim Field recording 2 points and Kenzie Hitt capturing 10 rebounds.

After finishing the day 1-3, the Bobcats are seeded 5th and will start the single elimination portion of the tournament Sunday morning as the Bobcats take on the Georgia Eagles at 9:30 a.m.
